This position works out of their home office. Can be located anywhere in the United States, preferably east of the Mississippi.

Travel: Frequent Overnight Travel Required

Hours: Full-time, with frequent travel and hours required beyond the standard 8:00 - 5:00

Physical Requirements: Must be able to: lift up to 75 pounds occasionally; operate equipment, walk across distances within the plant environment and climb stairs; squat, stoop, and bend around equipment; work overnight and for periods of up to 12 hours at a time

The Technical Manager, Sanitation Services is a food safety and sanitation expert that draws upon this knowledge, experience and training to provide many internal and external services. The primary responsibility is to provide exceptional service to our customers during the evaluation, implementation and start-up processes related to food safety and sanitation programs. Other responsibilities include the development and ongoing management of the technical training program, for the company’s Technical Sales Representatives, service report management, and acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in support of Marketing.



Technical Manager, Sanitation Services

  • Develops and continually improves the company’s SWAT process; develops all materials, reports, forms, and customer approvals required to conduct and report on the process
  • Using the SWAT process, completes in-depth evaluations of sanitation and food safety practices at customer and potential-customer locations
  • Completes a detailed report on each SWAT conducted and develops a presentation for use in reporting out to customer management
  • Participates in the customer report out and the sales process as a SME
  • Manages the implementation and start-up of Birko services for new customers; Operates in a matrix leadership role drawing on a variety of resources to ensure successful and timely program implementation
  • Develops the overall implementation plan and timeline, coordinating with the Regional Sales Director and Technical Sales Representative
  •  Coordinates with chemical and equipment production
  • Schedules and allocates internal resources to meet customer needs and implementation timelines
  • Establishes sanitation program, develops cleaning procedures, chemical mixing instructions, etc.
  • Develops reporting protocol
  • Trains plant staff, third-party sanitation vendors, Birko personnel
  •  Determines the point at which the implementation project is transitioned to the Region Sales Director and TSR
  • Periodically reviews customer service to ensure QA performance metrics are met and customer is satisfied
  • Continues to promote positive relationships with customers and plants by providing technical advice and assistance as necessary
  • Drives the development of the ongoing technical reporting provided by TSRs to customers; develops forms/formats/protocols; reviews all sanitation reports, manages the electronic storage of all reports, reports out weekly to management, coordinates the use of meta data, evaluates staff compliance. Working with Regional Sales Directors, develops the list of customer reports required, develops schedules, monitors TSR performance against schedule. 
  • Participates in quarterly meetings with Directors of Sales; participates in weekly pipeline calls with Sales Directors and Business Development personnel


Technical Trainer

  • Drives overall training program for current and new Technical Sales Representatives, including developing curriculum, defining resources and budget, establishing schedules
  • Develops curriculum for internal programs [Birko U] and manages delivery (self or others) of those programs
  • Works closes with the R&D department to learn products and be able to communicate product capabilities to TSRs
  • Evaluates technical merits and budgetary requirements of external programs for selection and inclusion in an overall training program
  • In conjunction with the HR Department, develops a training plan for each Technical Sales Representative
  • Develops and conducts training for TSRs working on performance improvement plans; works directly with staff, provides verbal and written instruction, and provides feedback and recommendations on performance to supervisors


Marketing Support

  • Attends and presents at tradeshows, conferences, and professional association meetings as a SME
  •  Participates on industry boards and committees representing Birko
  • Helps create blogs, marketing materials and other items to support sales
  • Other marketing tasks as needed

  • At least a Bachelor’s degree: chemistry, food safety, biology or similar
  • HAACP, SQF, or additional related certifications
  • 5-10 years’ experience with:       
  • Sanitation program evaluation
  • Sanitation program development
  • Troubleshooting
  • Writing and developing cleaning procedures 
  • Sanitation chemicals (choosing, mixing, testing, etc.)
  • Training sanitation personnel
  • Extensive food safety knowledge (USDA, FDA)
  • Knowledgeable about plant operations (Slaughter, Further Processing, Produce, etc.)
  • Third party food safety audit knowledge (SQF, BRC, AIB, GFSI)
  • Management / Supervisory experience
  • Project Management experience
  • Teaching / Training experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Budgeting/budget management experience
  • Ability to work in diverse teams
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills
  • Physical ability to walk around plants, climb steps, bend/maneuver to move and help install equipment
  •  Must be able to travel frequently; valid driver’s license required
